BIOGRAPHY

Camilo Silva F. Mastering engineer, professional audio gear designer and builder

Camilo's self-taught career started in high school (circa 1994) when he, as a drummer for many of his bands, also discovered his love for recording, using 4-track and 8-track portastudios to get his band's demo recordings. Likewise, Silva found his passion for mastering early, intrigued by the different phases of the music production chain and how they appeared in his favorite album booklets.

Camilo's first Mastering credits date back to 2002 when he worked for one of the most revered studios in Bogotá - Colombia, "El Estudio Ltda", later renamed "Galiano Producciones" when it was acquired by the renowned Colombian singer-songwriter Galy Galiano. Camilo worked at the studio when Galy Galiano was at the peak of his career as a music artist.

During his early years in the business, Silva realized that spending a long time inside the recording studio honing his aural and sensory skills was a mandatory step towards a full-time audio mastering career, so with that in mind, he pursued the next step in his career.

In 2004, Camilo Silva moved to the legendary "Estudios Audiovision", historically renowned as the top recording facility in the Colombian music industry and one of the top facilities in Latin America. A mythical space designed by the iconic architect and acoustician John Storyk and complemented with the highest level equipment of the time. Camilo settled there for the next 9 and a half years as a resident engineer and carried out his daily recording, mixing, and mastering duties while also taking care of the facility's maintenance duties as studio tech.

During this cycle of his professional career, Camilo has been awarded twice ⏤in 2007 and 2013, respectively⏤, with the prestigious Latin Grammy Award from the Recording Arts Academy. Furthermore, Silva received multiple nominations as an engineer, including "Album of the Year," "Record of the Year," and "Song of the Year." Additionally, multiple projects in which Camilo worked during that time frame received several nominations to the Latin Grammy in diverse categories during the same period. Currently, Silva has a total of 24 nominations to the Latin Grammy and two to the Grammy.

In 2013 he decided to open his own mastering facility named "Camilo Silva F Mastering", equipped with top-notch analog and digital technology and Camilo's own designs, including his all-tube digital-to-analog converters. As an electronics DIY diehard, Silva loves to build, modify and blow stuff up! Some of his stock pieces are also modified to Camilo's unique needs to extract the last drop of performance from each of them.

Camilo has mastered more than 350 full-length albums and thousands of singles in his room, averaging 1800 songs per year in his last period. Also, seven albums mastered at Camilo Silva F Mastering have been nominated for the Latin Grammy award, from which Claraluna's "Imaginaré" won in 2018.

Camilo has recorded, mixed and/or mastered for artists like Carlos Vives, Andrés Cepeda, Shallow Side, Morat, Ventino, Maluma, Alkilados, Gaiteros de San Jacinto, Telebit as well as Latin Grammy-nominated artists Colectro, Aitana, LosPetitFellas, Doctor Krapula, Claraluna, Cimarrón y Juventino Ojito y su Son Mocaná, among hundreds of artists worldwide. Camilo's work is present on all five continents with clients from more than 230 cities around the globe. (Source: https://soundbetter.com/profiles/11051-camilo-silva-f-mastering/map)

Furthermore, Silva enjoys sharing his deep knowledge in advanced and unusual Mastering and dynamics processing techniques in several workshops, masterclasses, and lectures worldwide. Also, his "Dual All-Discrete" microphone preamplifier design has become a staple in the local recording community, and there's quite a lot of these units installed in the USA, Europe, and Latin America. Camilo's iconic preamps and compressors can be found at some of the most prolific recording studios in the USA, such as Studio G Brooklyn (Joel Hamilton, NYC), Flux Studios (Fab Dupont, NYC), Bunker Studios (NYC), Art House Studios (Julio Reyes, Miami), AfterHours Studios (Rafa Sardina, Los Angeles), Sputnik Sound (Vance Powell, Nashville), among several others around the world.

Camilo has worked with some of the most renowned worldwide artists such as Maluma, Carlos Vives, Aitana, Andrés Cepeda, Paula Arenas, Shallow Side, LosPetitFellas, Morat, Mojito Lite, Gaiteros de San Jacinto, Petrona Martínez, Dr. Krapula, Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Colombia, among several others.

Camilo's passion for electronics, which he learned, since he was 10 years old from his brother Juan Manuel, has taken him to develop his own line of professional audio equipment, being the first Colombian manufacturer of professional audio gear for recording studios.

"There is no such thing as recording studio secrets, that only denotes insecurities… Whoever wants a piece of my knowledge only has to come and take it…."
